The SCCI delegation, led by Md. Jashim Uddin, President, called on Hon’ble Md. Golam Sarwar, Secretary General SAARC, in presence of Country Directors, India, Bhutan, Nepal and Maldives to discuss a way forward to enhance and strengthen socio-economic cooperation within the South Asian region.

Md. Jashim Uddin, President, SCCI expressed his gratitude to Hon’ble Md. Golam Sarwar, Secretary General SAARC, and extended congratulations on his assuming the Chair of Secretary General of SAARC. Emphasizing the potential for South Asia to evolve into a robust economic bloc, Md. Jashim Uddin highlighted the comparatively low intra-regional trade within SAARC in contrast to other global regions.

He underscored the vast untapped trade potential within the region, citing examples such as the substantial trade volume between India and China, and India and Bangladesh.

Drawing attention to Bangladesh as a significant market and production hub, he noted its status as the second-largest market for garments, while recognizing Nepal and Bhutan for their potential to supply affordable and environmentally friendly energy to Bangladesh.
Mr. Chandi Raj Dhakal, Vice President SCCI (Nepal), provided valuable insights into the pivotal role of South Asian states in advancing the vision of SAARC. Whereas, Dr. Mariyam Shakeela, President, Maldives Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry, emphasized the need for collective efforts to achieve regional prosperity, urging the fostering of public-private partnerships.
Mr. Wansapriya Gunaseela, General Assembly Member, SCCI (Sri Lanka), advocated for the adoption of modern techniques, methods and technology to enhance productivity, efficiency, stability, and job creation in the region.
Extending a warm welcome to President SCCI and the esteemed delegates from South Asia, Hon’ble Md. Golam Sarwar, Secretary General SAARC, acknowledged the significant progress made by SAARC since its inception. He highlighted the slowdown in recent years but emphasized the numerous opportunities and achievements the region has witnessed. He mentioned the commendable work carried out by various regional and specialized bodies under the SAARC umbrella. He also shared the recent advancements made to expedite processes, commencing meetings with SAARC bodies to synchronize efforts for collective regional growth.
Moreover, the Secretary General SAARC, emphasized the importance of resolving the recognition matter of SAARC allied and apex bodies.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Secretary General SAARC, extended his full support to the socio-economic initiatives realizing the collective achievement of sustainable development goals in South Asia.
