4th Sichuan-South Asia Business Promotion Seminar

4th Sichuan-South Asia Business Promotion Seminar was organized by Chinese Council for Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) Sichuan Council at Chengdu. The seminar was inaugurated by H.E. Gan Lin, Vice Governor of Sichuan Province of the People’s Republic of China. Addressing at the inaugural session, H.E said that Sichuan Province is abundant of energy resources and can help South Asian countries to overcome energy crisis.” He offered the Private Sector of South Asia to benefit from the experience of power generation and manufacturing enterprises of the province to address energy challenges.

Mr. Tariq Sayeed, former President of SAARC Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SAARC CCI) who led the South Asian business delegation asked the Chinese enterprises to help South Asian countries to develop required infrastructure for power generation stating that the region of South Asian was faced with energy deficit of more than 70000 MW. He added that due to power cuts ranging from 8-16 hours, the cost of business operations has exceeded to 25% in countries like Pakistan and Nepal and about 10% in India, despite the fact that the region had hydropower potential of 150,000 MW. He sought considerable investment in both conventional and renewable energy resources from China to energy scarce South Asian countries. Vice General of M/s Dangfong- a leading Electric Company also made presentation during the keynote session.

Mr. Zubair Ahmed Malik, President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry while addressing to Business Session praised the role of the Government and enterprises of China to help Pakistan by installing power generation plants, however, expressed his concerns about present energy scenario in Pakistan, which is faced with acute shortage of energy exceeding 7500 MW. He asked Sichuan Provincial Government to make 3 investment in Hydel Power projects and help in electricity generation from Thar Coal, which he referred as the 2nd largest coal reserves in the World.

General, FICCI (India), Ismail Asif, Vice President, MNCCI (Maldives), Anoop Bhattarai, President NCEC (Nepal), Kosala Wikramanayake, President IBC and Vice President SAARC CCI (Sri Lanka) addressed the session in addition to H.E. Muhammad Azizul Haque, Ambassador Bangladesh and H.E. Mohammad Rasheed, Ambassador of Maldives. The session was presided over by Iqbal Tabish, Secretary General of SAARC CCI.
